Power Transmission Gearbox

A three-stage gearbox that converts a 1,180 rpm motor input into 348.95 lbf-ft at 150.5 rpm. I selected the rolling bearings and shaft-retention hardware, then analyzed the integrated design.

Problem

Design a compact powertrain that increases torque while cutting speed to 146–154 rpm. The output shaft also had to sit 90 degrees from the input.

Constraint

The gearbox had to fit within 16 × 16 × 20 in. and exceed 95% efficiency. Its components also had to satisfy the assigned service-life and shaft-load requirements.

What I did

  • Calculated axial and radial bearing loads with one teammate, then used the required C10 ratings to select off-the-shelf bearings.
  • Sized square keys against crushing with a factor of safety of 2 and selected retaining rings using shaft and groove geometry.
  • Contributed the integration analysis and helped prepare the final report and presentation.

Result

  • The final analysis projected 348.95 lbf-ft at 150.5 rpm from the assigned motor input.
  • The analyzed design fit the required envelope. It projected 9.8 hp output, which cleared the 95% efficiency requirement.
